I have recently developed a small area in my yard as a butterfly and hummingbird garden. It is such a joy!! It is teaching me a lot about God’s creatures that visit, and also about my plants, which I’m loving! I’m now in “prepare for winter” mode, and I’m sowing seeds, deadheading and cutting down the old blooms to make the garden emerge even more full and beautiful this coming Spring. One of my favorite plants is my butterfly bush. The blooms are very fragrant and such a rich shade of purple.
Something I have learned about my plants is the need to deadhead (and no, I’m not referring to a Grateful Dead fan). The definition of deadhead (in this instance) is to, “remove dead flower heads from a plant to encourage further blooming”. While performing this task, I felt God tell me that this was also necessary in US to encourage further growing and the producing of fruits. WOW!! I love how He speaks to us through the ordinary and His creation!! I simply stopped and thought about what it was I was doing. I was removing the old, dead blooms so that new blooms, full of nectar, could feed the beautiful butterflies that frequent my garden. Removing the old, dead self, so that the new self could produce fruit and fulfill it’s God given purpose. We must die to self and allow God to “deadhead” us so to speak. When the old (flesh, selfishness, hurt, anger, the past, anything that blocks God from speaking to us and using us) is removed, there is room for new growth. There is room for God to work in our hearts, changing us and molding us to what He wants us to be. Room to speak. This doesn’t happen all at once; it’s an ongoing, daily process. Jesus says in Luke, “And He was saying to them all, ‘If anyone wishes to follow Me [as My disciple], he must deny himself [set aside selfish interests], and take up his cross daily [expressing a willingness to endure whatever may come] and follow Me [believing in Me, conforming to My example in living and, if need be, suffering or perhaps dying because of faith in Me]” (Luke 9:23 AMP, emphasis mine). What has God been saying to you lately? What area is He working on in you? What is your purpose for this season of your life? If you are unsure, simply ask Him. Pray and be IN His Word DAILY! That is one way He speaks to us (through His word). We have His promise that He WILL work in us, “I am convinced and confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will [continue to] perfect and complete it until the day of Christ Jesus [the time of His return]” (Philippians 1:6 AMP).
Thank you for taking the time to read this!! Leave a comment and share how God is “deadheading” in your life! I’d love to hear about it! And watch for. more pictures from my garden! I am already looking forward to Spring!
